逆説的に聞こえるかもしれないが、人口が増え、豊かになり、知的水準も向上した国ほど、少部数の出版物が多いものだ。価値の多様化や専門分化が進んだ社会ほど、専門書を求める数千人単位の読者が存在しやすい。したがって、数千部さえすれば元がとれるような書物の刊行点数も増えていくのである。
このような状況が私たちに教えるのは、あまり知られていない、しかも常識に反するため滅多に公然と口にされない、ある事実である。すなわち――「経済的で豊かな国で出版されている本の大半は、そうでない国で出版されている本と同様、せいぜい数千部しか売れない」。そんなはずはない、先進国では本が大量に印刷されているではないか、と言う人もいるだろう。たしかに、そのような本も存在している。だが、そのまわりには、ほとんど話題に上りもしない少部数の本たちが存在しており、全体のなかではこちらが多数派なのだ。
